Broadcast Project Engineer

Reports to:       Head of Project Management

Location:            Raynes Park

Salary:               c£35k, full-time, permanent

Job Purpose

As Broadcast Project Engineer, you will work as part of the project engineering team and be responsible for the planning, design and implementation of broadcast-related projects for both internal and external racecourse customers across a wide range of applications.

The role will require you to evaluate the appropriate use of technology for the customer’s needs, and organize and prioritise your workload within an agreed schedule. Liaison with third party contractors and suppliers may be required.

You will run broadcast projects from initial concept through to completion, on-time and to budget ensuring all documentation is up-to-date at all times. This role will manage the operational handover to the customer including any relevant operational guides, and after-sales support. The projects team also manage the technical planning and Outside Broadcast delivery for major race meetings supporting operations and other OB-related functions.

Some experience of outside broadcast would be beneficial as this position will also cover as extra engineer at busy periods in the OB schedule which may require some weekend work.

Skills & Experience

  • Degree or equivalent level of education in engineering, media/broadcast or similar
  • Sound knowledge of broadcast technology, software and systems
  • Knowledge of broadcast IT, TCP/IP, networking and cloud technologies
  • Able to manage resources, project plans, budgets and customer expectations
  • Demonstrable ability to resolve technical problems quickly and efficiently

General Assistant (Workshop)

Reports to:       Workshop Supervisor

Location:            Raynes Park

Salary:               c£20-25k, full-time, permanent

Job Purpose

This role will organise and run RaceTech’s Goods In/Out and Stores area ensuring it functions efficiently and effectively. Main duties will be maintaining and monitoring stock control; ensuring goods are checked and documented, unpacked and packed safely and delivered to correct areas; operating a forklift truck; keeping the stores, workshops, yard and car park areas clean and tidy; carrying out general maintenance tasks throughout the buildings; duty driving to collect and drop off equipment; plus assisting Workshop colleagues as required.

Skills & Experience

  • Stores/goods in-out experience desirable
  • Forklift driving experience useful
  • Basic DIY skills, flexibility, enthusiasm and willingness to learn new skills

Outside Broadcast Guarantee Engineer

Reports to:       Engineering

Location:            Regional

Salary:               c£50k subject to experience, full-time, permanent

Job Purpose

Outside Broadcast (OB) Guarantee Engineers will have overall responsibility for ensuring all technical facilities are delivered on time and to the highest possible standards on location. These include leadership of the engineering team, deployment of the OB Unit, guarantee responsibility for all inputs and outputs, (including any presentation and/or Racecourse TV facilities) and ensuring signal delivery to the customer(s). This position will also support the Unit Manager in delivering the service to the highest possible standards to customers and other racing stakeholders.

The Guarantee Engineer will ensure all standard operating procedures are followed, will lead the resolution of faults or incidents promptly, (delegating where appropriate), be responsible for the upkeep and repatriation of all equipment, ensure that overall engineering standards are maintained and proactively seek to improve systems and processes.

The Guarantee Engineer will, in conjunction with the regional Engineering Managers, proactively participate in the technical planning and delivery for major meetings. It is expected that the Guarantee Engineer will cover Unit Managers on occasions and after gaining suitable experience.

Skills & Experience

  • Excellent knowledge of Outside Broadcast and live sports broadcasting desirable
  • Deep understanding of HD-SDI and/or IP Broadcast systems
  • Strong competency in use of electrical supply systems typically up to 63amp single phase
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience with end-to-end signal flow of broadcast camera systems
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience with broadcast matrices, switchers, talkback and ‘glue’
  • Strong RF knowledge with radio cameras, links and radio talkback systems
  • Competent in use of broadcast IT systems
  • Practical approach to problem-solving to rectify faults and/or establish a ‘work round’

Photofinish Operator

Reports to:         Photofinish Supervisor

Location:            Midlands & York

Salary:               c£35k subject to experience, full-time, permanent

Job Purpose

This position will provide the photofinish integrity service on race day providing high quality images to the judges to allow correct determination of the race finishing order. Photofinish operators will also participate in regular surveys to ensure correct alignment of the winning line and photofinish camera platforms.

The successful candidate will be directly involved in the progress and development of RaceTech’s photofinish service both in terms of personnel and photofinish technology. The photofinish team also lead the advances in other timing and tracking technology.

This role will be part of the race day TVOB participating in the driving and on occasions may be required to operate a race camera – full training will be provided.

Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in photofinish operation ideally in horse racing
  • Demonstrate sound knowledge of photofinish technology, software and systems
  • Good colour vision, attention to detail and high levels of concentration

Photofinish Trainee

Reports to:       Photofinish Supervisor

Location:           Raynes Park, South & York, North

Salary:              Starting at £20k p.a., full-time, permanent

 

Job Purpose

This position will be trained to set up, rig and deliver the photofinish integrity service on race day providing high quality images to the judges to allow correct determination of the race result. Photofinish trainees will also learn how to correctly align the photofinish mirror as well as survey the race course winning line.

This role will be part of the race day TV Outside Broadcast participating in the HGV driving and on occasions may be required to operate a race camera – full training will be provided.

  • Good understanding of photography and lenses

Broadcast Technician (Workshop)

Location:          Raynes Park, SW London

Reports to:       Workshop Supervisor

Salary:              £30-35k

Job Purpose

  • Active member of the workshop team in annual preventative maintenance, upkeep of equipment and vehicles
  • Deliver technical services to standards set and maintained by RaceTech and to customer requirements
  • Fault diagnose broadcast equipment
  • First line support and problem-solving to our field crews
  • Train future appointees
  • Provide engineer cover for holiday/ad-hoc and to large events in the field
  • Assist in the planning of kit allocation

Skills & Experience

  • A good grounding in broadcast engineering to a hands-on practical level; DIY skills

Trainee Engineer

Location:          Raynes Park, SW London

Reports to:       Engineering Manager

Salary:             c £22k p.a. subject to experience, full-time, permanent

Job Purpose

Trainee Engineers will be required to fulfill a wide range of engineering tasks covering video and audio signal quality, camera racking, communications, links, rigging, testing, establishing external feeds, troubleshooting and assisting other members of the crew in a live sports Outside Broadcast (OB) environment. At base the Trainee Engineer will participate in maintenance duties, ensuring all equipment is in good working order as well as the planning and preparation of larger fixtures. Trainee Engineers will also be expected to undergo HGV driver training.

The role will also include a variety of general OB tasks, to ensure the smooth operation and delivery of all technical services to our racecourses and broadcast partners.

It is expected that the Trainee Engineer will progress to OB Engineer status after gaining suitable skills and experience.  We require applicants to be within 30 minutes’ drive of our Southern base at Raynes Park, South-West London.

Job Purpose

OB Engineers will be required to fulfill a wide range of engineering tasks on location covering video and audio signal quality, camera racking, communications, links, rigging, testing, establishing external feeds, and troubleshooting in a live sports OB environment

The OB engineer will support the Guarantee Engineer and Unit Manager on-site, and assist other members of the crew to ensure delivery of a high-quality service.  At base the OB Engineer will participate in the planning and preparation of larger fixtures. It is expected that the OB Engineer will cover Guarantee Engineers on occasions after gaining suitable experience.

Skills & Experience

  • Good knowledge of Outside Broadcast and live sports broadcasting desirable
  • Knowledge of HD-SDI and/or IP Broadcast systems

AUDIO/PA ENGINEER

Location:          Raynes Park, with regular travel to UK racecourses

Reports to:       Head of Project Management

Salary:               c £35k p.a. negotiable dependent on experience, full-time, permanent

Job Purpose

RaceTech is looking for an experienced audio engineer to deliver our race day public address service, audio system design, manage audio installation projects and the maintenance of installed systems.

You will have a solid audio engineering background, applied in production and installation. The majority of systems used are based on 100V line distribution, so a good understanding of how these work is needed, as is knowledge of digital and analogue-based audio systems and experience with sound systems for emergency purposes.  Familiarity with RF systems and radio communications equipment, as well as AV experience would be an advantage. An occasional requirement will be to provide race day PA cover for major race meetings and making announcements throughout the meeting, so you must be confident with public speaking.

With a strong customer focus and excellent interpersonal skills, you will have good management skills, as you will run a team of subcontract staff who operate the racecourse sound systems on race days.

There will be extensive UK-wide travel to racecourses as well as liaison with third parties (building contractors etc.) and our own race day staff. Frequent weekend and bank holiday working will be considered normal in this role.

Skills & Experience

  • Good working knowledge of the operation of public address systems.
  • Good understanding of the technical parameters involved in audio systems design.
  • Good working knowledge of current digital signal processing (DSP)-based audio technology.
  • Excellent IT skills.

Trainee Camera Operator/HGV

Location:          Regional – North, Midlands or South

Reports to:       Operations

Salary:               c £25k p.a. subject to experience, full-time, permanent

Job Purpose

As an experienced HGV driver this role will have the primary responsibility of the safe driving of the RaceTech Outside Broadcast vehicles adhering to the applicable driving regulations. Additionally, this role will be trained to operate race coverage cameras. Full training will be provided on the fundamentals of Outside Broadcasting, and the safe rigging, operation and de-rigging of race cameras along with hoist vehicles and other OB equipment.

This position will also be instrumental in rigging at larger events.

At base this position will coach other staff in the skills necessary to drive HGV vehicles and support the transport and workshop teams in the maintenance of the HGV fleet.

The role will also include a variety of general OB tasks, to ensure the smooth operation and delivery of all technical services to our racecourses and broadcast partners. Candidates with the right approach can also benefit from learning other skills, photo finish, public address and presentation cameras being a few examples.

  • Minimum 5 years’ HGV driving
